After
the discovery of gold in the Umvoti Creek by Fred and
Henry Barber and their cousin Graham Barber, the Gold
Commissioner from Kaapsche Hoop, David Wilson, declared
a township at the base of the Umvoti Creek where it
entered the De Kaap Valley, by breaking a bottle of
gin here on 24 July 1884. There was a choice between
naming the township Barberton or Rimerton. By popular
demand the name Barberton was chosen. To perpetuate
Rimer's association with the place , the Umvoti Creek
was henceforth known as 'Rimer's Creek'.
Edwin Bray’s discovery of the Golden Quarry in 1885,
so named because it looked as if the rock was formed
entirely of gold, resulted in the mine becoming well
known throughout the world. The Golden Quarry, the Oriental,
the Edwin Bray and the Nil Desperandum together composed
the Sheba Reef Gold Mining Company and production from
these mines astounded the world. Shares of 1 Pound were
re-sold for 120 Pounds per share.
